Richard's active flying years occupied the tense period of the Cold War. After squadron tours in Northern Europe, he became a test pilot at Boscombe Down during the development of the English Electric Lightning, a high point in his flying career. Another high point was as a Squadron Commander at the Officer Cadet Training Unit, RAF Henlow. Leaving the RAF he found a second career with the Industrial Society. With his own consultancy, he has subsequently worked for British Executive Service Overseas (BESO), training in Russia, Ukraine and Romania. He has also worked for the Prince's Trust.
